A language picker is one of the most common components on the web, and one of the least considered. Inspired by Beautiful UI, a library of interface components by the studio Turbo, we set out to rethink it without copying what already exists. A tiny planet replaces the radio button: it rolls to the language you pick and turns to show where that language is spoken. The interface switches language as you choose, and confirming makes the planet grow to reveal the country. Familiar components are the best place for this kind of experiment: everyone knows how they work, so the interaction can be playful without being confusing. As interfaces increasingly look alike, rethinking the ordinary is how we keep them memorable, without giving up a readable list and a working keyboard.
